That chocolate shop still to this day might be some of the best ‘novel’ I’ve read in a long time. As confounding as the British retreat from France in Atonement without the soul-crushing.

@Tom Vail Thanks Tom – I think I’ll leave the novel writing to Jeff – I don’t think I have the chops for it. Maybe a memoir or some other nonfiction… perhaps even a book of some moderately competent poetry! In the last 10 years I’ve read almost exclusively nonfiction titles, but thanks to my daughters, Jeff, and a couple other writers that have asked me for copy editing services… I’ve read a few really wonderful stories. I understand being busy – same goes over at my house (the stack of books to read, that is) – but you’ll be missing a great story!

As a completely unbiased party to this particular story I have to say that after reading only the extractions posted in this review, this may be the single most important American writing since the US Constitution, which automatically makes this more important than anything ever written in the French language (though most French literature comes to us in the form of written notifications of surrender).

I will likely buy 3 copies: one for home, office, and car. I may purchase a 4th specifically for the bathroom.

Having had a chance to read this myself prior to it being a finished work, I have a review that can actually be summed up in a single word: Different.

I read it initially because a friend wrote it and asked me to review it. I’ll read it again because it is worth a second read. There are parts of the book that make you want to go back and re-read them for two reasons. The first being that you were not precisely sure you read what you think you read. And the second being that it was just so fun to read it the first time you HAD to get in line for a second ride.

A great piece of fiction.

I will not likely buy or read the book. I keep a perpetual stack of next-to-read books on the shelf by my bed and it never gets below a half dozen. It is like my to-do list: by the time I cross one item off, I have added two or three more.

Having said that, I really enjoy your writing style. It was fun to read your review even if just for the wit: “…grabs us by the short and curlies…” and “At this point I knew I was screwed.”

So when does your first novel come out?
